HELPFUL STEPS AFTER A LOSS

  • Keep a journal of all claims activities
  • Report the claim to the agent and/or to the insurer
  • Ask your insurer to explain and describe your policy coverage to you and to identify any time constraints
  • Memorialize your communications with the insurer -- including specific statements by insurer -- in writing or by email to insurer
  • Read and understand your policy conditional duties after a loss
  • Safety First -- secure the premises
  • Restore safety and fire protection systems and other protections
  • Take immediate action to protect property from further damage
  • Photograph the damaged and undamaged property
  • Identify the costs of temporary measures necessary to resume operations and maintain safety and security
  • Make necessary plans for living arrangements and/or business continuity
  • Make plans to repair and/or replace damaged property
